This channel is dedicated to the recorded legacy of the Israel Woodwind Quintet. Drawn mostly from the first chair players of the Israel Philharmonic Orchestra, in its early years, personnel changed as players joined and left the orchestra until the group consisting of Uri Shoham, flute, Eliahu Thorner, oboe, Richard Lesser, clarinet, Meir Rimon, French horn and Mordechai Rechtman, bassoon, crystalized in the early 1970's. During the thirty years the IWQ performed and recorded, from about 1963 until the early 1990's, the constants were Shoham, Thorner and Rechtman; others are cited per recording. The IWQ was distinguished by its commitment to performing music by Israeli composers and the music of JS Bach, Mozart and Beethoven as transcribed for quintet by Mordechai Rechtman. Three CDs of these transcriptions are available on the Meridian label. These musicians have all retired from the IPO. The Israel Woodwind Quintet was succeeded by The New Israel Woodwind Quintet.
